Ask Your Workplace About Their Emergency Plan
Know how to stay safe at work before an emergency happens.
You spend a large part of your week at work, so it's just as important to know your workplace's emergency procedures as your home plan. Most employers have an emergency action plan — but many employees never read it. Taking a few minutes to ask the right questions now can help you respond quickly and safely when it matters.
Ask for the Written Plan
Request a copy of your workplace's emergency action plan from your HR department or safety officer. Many employers are required to keep one on hand.
Learn the Evacuation Routes
Find the primary and secondary exits from your work area, and locate the designated assembly point where employees gather after evacuating.
Identify Floor Wardens
Ask who the emergency coordinators or floor wardens are for your area, and learn their role in guiding coworkers during an evacuation or shelter-in-place.
Save Emergency Contacts
Keep your workplace's emergency hotline, security desk, and your manager's contact info in your phone so you can reach them during or after an event.
