Vehicle Preparedness
Schedule a Vehicle Maintenance Check
A reliable vehicle can be your safest way out during an emergency.
During a hurricane or evacuation order, your vehicle becomes your lifeline. A breakdown on a crowded evacuation route can leave you stuck in dangerous conditions with no easy way out. Regular maintenance keeps your car ready to go when you need it most — and gives you peace of mind every day.
Tires
Check tire pressure monthly and inspect tread depth. Replace tires when tread is worn below 2/32 of an inch. Don't forget the spare — make sure it's inflated and in good condition.
Fluids
Check and top off engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Low or dirty fluids are a leading cause of breakdowns during evacuations.
Battery
Test your battery twice a year and replace it every 3–5 years. Clean corrosion from the terminals and make sure cables are tight. A weak battery can leave you stranded when you need to leave fast.
Brakes & Wipers
Listen for squealing or grinding brakes and have them inspected yearly. Replace wiper blades every 6–12 months so you can see clearly in heavy rain.
Lights & Signals
Test headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazard lights regularly. Burned-out bulbs are unsafe and can get you pulled over during an evacuation.
Build a simple maintenance schedule.
Set phone reminders every 3 months for fluid and tire checks, and schedule a full inspection with a mechanic at least once a year — ideally before hurricane season begins on June 1.
