Test Your Smoke Detectors
Working smoke detectors save lives — test yours regularly.
Smoke detectors are your first warning of a fire, giving you and your family time to escape. But they only work if they're tested, maintained, and replaced when needed. Follow the steps below to make sure yours are ready.
Test Monthly
Press and hold the test button on each smoke detector until it sounds. Test every detector in your home, including basements and hallways.
Replace Batteries
Change batteries at least once a year, or immediately if the detector chirps (a low-battery warning). A good rule is to change them when you change your clocks for daylight saving time.
Replace Detectors
Replace the entire smoke detector every 10 years from the manufacture date (printed on the back), even if it still tests fine.
Placement Tips
- •Install one in every bedroom and outside each sleeping area.
- •Place at least one on every level of the home, including the basement.
- •Mount on the ceiling or high on a wall, away from kitchens and bathrooms to avoid false alarms.
- •Interconnected detectors are best — when one sounds, they all sound.
If a detector fails to sound during testing, replace the battery and test again. If it still doesn't work, replace the entire unit right away.
