Ask Your School About Their Emergency Plan
Know how your child's school will keep them safe during an emergency.
When a disaster strikes during school hours, your child's school is responsible for their safety until you can reunite. Knowing the school's emergency plan — including how they'll contact you, where students will be taken, and how you'll pick up your child — helps you stay calm and act fast. Take time to ask these questions before an emergency happens.
Request the School's Emergency Plan
Ask the school office or administration for a copy of their emergency procedures. Most schools have a written plan covering evacuations, lockdowns, and shelter-in-place.
Learn the Reunification Process
Find out where students are taken during an evacuation and the exact process for picking up your child. Ask what ID or authorization you'll need to show.
Update Your Contact Information
Make sure the school has your current phone number, email, and at least one alternate emergency contact who can pick up your child if you can't.
Save School Emergency Contacts
Keep the school's main office, attendance line, and emergency hotline numbers saved in your phone so you can reach them quickly during an event.
