The PASS Method
How to use a fire extinguisher safely.
The PASS method is a simple, four-step technique for operating a portable fire extinguisher. Learning it ahead of time helps you act quickly and safely if a small fire breaks out.
P
Pull
Pull the pin. This breaks the tamper seal and unlocks the operating lever.
A
Aim
Aim low. Point the nozzle or hose at the BASE of the fire, not the flames.
S
Squeeze
Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent in a controlled, even flow.
S
Sweep
Sweep from side to side, covering the base of the fire until it appears to be out.
Safety Tips
- •Only use a fire extinguisher on small, contained fires (incipient stage).
- •Keep your back to a clear exit so you can escape quickly if the fire grows.
- •If the fire does not go out, or you feel unsafe, get out and call 911.
- •Have your fire extinguisher inspected and serviced regularly.
- •Remember the types: use an ABC extinguisher for most household fires.
