Financial & Records Preparedness
Review Your Insurance Coverage
Know exactly what your policies protect before a disaster hits.
Insurance is one of the fastest ways to recover financially after a disaster — but only if you understand what your policy covers. Many people discover too late that their standard policy excludes flooding, has a separate hurricane deductible, or doesn't pay for temporary housing. Reviewing your coverage now lets you close gaps before the next storm.
Flood damage is almost never covered by standard home insurance.
Flood insurance is sold as a separate policy, often through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and typically takes 30 days to take effect.
Homeowners or Renters Insurance
- •Does it cover wind, hail, and water damage from storms?
- •Is there a separate deductible for hurricanes or named storms?
- •Does it cover additional living expenses if you can't stay in your home?
- •Is flooding covered? (Most standard policies do NOT include flood damage.)
Auto Insurance
- •Does your comprehensive coverage include storm, flood, and falling-object damage?
- •Do you have rental reimbursement if your vehicle is unusable?
- •What is your deductible for comprehensive claims?
Health & Life Insurance
- •Are your doctors and prescriptions covered if you're displaced to another area?
- •Do you know how to reach your insurer's emergency line?
- •Are life insurance policies up to date with correct beneficiaries?
Document Everything
Save your policy numbers, agent contact info, and claim phone numbers in your phone and your Go Bag. After a storm, photograph all damage before you start cleaning up.
